Our group leader asked, “Is there anyone here who would like to be witnessed’?
I stepped into the middle of a circle of brothers and within a few seconds, found myself crying out loud.
I wasn’t sure what prompted me to step in, but I did feel a pull.
Maybe because, having been to a previous Sacred Sons event, I felt comfortable in the container which these brothers do such a great job of holding.
Suffice it to say, the group leaders guided me through a thoughtful and considerate process of helping me process what I was feeling.
I'll keep the details private (unless the Sacred Sons IG team decides to post on social 😆), but suffice it to say, it was a cathartic and healing experience.
Why would I return after already having been to an event earlier this year, you might ask?
The honest answer is that this has become a lifelong work for me.
As you quickly find out after a few days in this space, Brotherhood Is The Medicine.
There will always be things to work on, emotions to process, challenges to talk through.
The brutal reality is that most men have no safe and healthy outlet to process these emotions, so they keep them bottled up for years, and for some, decades.
One brother shared openly that 3 months earlier, he had tried to commit suicide.
After 4 days together, that same brother was a completely changed man. This organization is not only changing lives, it’s saving them.
Courtesy of American Foundation for Suicide Prevention:
The rate of suicide is highest in middle-aged white men
In 2021, men died by suicide 3.9x more than women
White males accounted for 69.68% of suicide deaths in 2021
This shit is real.
Keep Showing Up
The consistent message across the 3 days was that this is not a one-and-done fix.
The brutal and honest fact is that most men today have NEVER been through a rite of passage (myself included).
As a result we were never equipped with the tools necessary to process emotions, to understand how to communicate with other men, to truly understand what it means to respect the women in our lives, and to honestly show up for them in all the ways they need for us to show up.
Many of these women have been carrying this burden for decades. You may know some of these women. There’s likely one (or more) in your family that comes to mind.
I know some of you are squirming in your Lazy-Boy as you read this, and that’s OK.
The fact that it’s bringing up any sort of emotion is important. Sit with that. It just might be what you need to take the next step towards growth in your life.
And don’t give me that, “I’m too old for this” shit.
As men, it’s time we step up and do our part.
The world is falling apart all around us and we’re being called to be stronger partners, husbands, boyfriends, leaders, teachers, guides, and more.
Let’s get to it.
with gratitude,
🙏 Harry
