Every Saturday I share a story about my life in a way that you can hopefully relate to. I believe we are all here to share our journey, both the highs and the lows, as this is how we collectively raise the consciousness of the planet. If anything resonates with you, please share! 🙏
Today is the 11th straight week I've published the newsletter in this format, woo-hoo!
There have been so many good things which have come out of this practice. I have a growing interest in writing and I'm consciously working to build that muscle.
With every letter, I get clearer with my messaging and better yet, I find a way to get those at-times incoherent and multi-layered thoughts out of my head and onto (digital) paper.
I strongly recommend this as a practice for anyone whose brain is also constantly brimming with ideas, or heart with emotions. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this includes you as well.
Yes you.
Don't worry about "building an audience" just yet. Because even if nobody ever reads one line of what you wrote, it is still an immensely satisfying process.
That doesn't mean it's easy.
As much as I'd like to say that as a result of these letters, I've become a more disciplined and consistent writer, for whom writing now comes naturally, it's more akin to a daily practice.
What's been helpful is continuing to open myself up to new ideas, which continue to stimulate my brain (and occasionally my heart).
Reading is Fundamental
During any given week, I have a good 3 to 4 books in-progress. They're usually in different topics, which gives me the ability to decide what I want to learn more about that day. Sometimes I make through a few chapters and decide that I need a break, just to give me time to integrate what I'm learning.
My current active library consists of The Five Love Languages, The Four Agreements Companion Book, The Light Shall Set You Free, and Snow Leopard: How Legendary Writers Create A Category Of One. Make of that list what you will 😉 .
I've spoken in an earlier letter about the importance of building a second brain and I use this approach for books as well. Anytime I'm suggested a book, I simply add it my Goodreads account, and it's out of my head.
“If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time to write. Simple as that.”
- Stephen King
Now, having an easy reference of continuous inspiration is one thing. Deciding how to encapsulate key insights and share them with your audience in a way that resonates with your values is another.
A Storyteller Is Born
It's not that writing is completely foreign to me. I remember (way) back to my grade school days. Every Wednesday, we would enter the classroom and be greeted with 20 new words on the blackboard. The assignment for the next day would be to write 20 sentences using those words.
I don't remember if it was right away or over time, I realized how much more challenging and fun it would be to take those 20 random words and turn them into a story.
My teacher loved these stories, and eventually began asking if would read the story to the classroom. I'm not sure when that passion faded, but I'm grateful for its return.
You Have It In You Already
Storytelling is as old as time. In a future letter I will dig deeper into the importance of oral stories, a practice which has played a significant role in the transmission and preservation of cultural heritage in many societies throughout history.
But for now, I wanted to write this shorter letter to remind you of the importance of your childhood experiences.
What memories from your childhood can and should be revisited from the perspective of remembering those times when you're lit you up, smiling ear-to-ear, or beaming with pride?
Consider this a reminder that hey are waiting for you, courtesy of hyper-dimensional, parallel timelines 🪐✨😉
🙏 with gratitude,
Harry
