If you’ve been following my writing or posts for some time you might recall that I’m a big fan of apps and tools.
I’m a sucker for a shiny object that just might make my life a bit easier.
Every once in a while I do stumble upon a tool that genuinely is a time saver and one that I end up adding to my quiver.
But that’s the exception.
Lately, I’ve been making more of a concerted effort to be more discerning about not only the quantity, but the quality of what I consume.
I’m finding myself drawn more to content that makes me think deeper about a topic.
I will admit, as I write this, that sometimes in order to be able to see the forest for the trees, it helps to be in the right environment. One that provides the headspace to clearly think through these ideas.
Say, for example, you happen to be playing some focus music from the Endel app on your noise-cancelling headphones in seat 42H on the Air France flight back from Germany 😆 (my, that works wonders).
I’m Not Taking You For Granted
Yes you.
Because if I don’t, and I get lazy, you eventually get bored and stop tuning in.
Jay Acunzo writes one of my favorite and more insightful newsletters, Playing Favorites.
I love his writing as it’s a style I aspire to replicate.
In a recent newsletter he reminded me of a study I had read about last month.
Edison Research, a company that regularly tracks podcast listener sentiment, released the following statistic, polling people who listen to podcasts on a weekly basis:
81% listen to 10 or fewer episodes
57% listen to 5 or fewer episodes
While I continue to work on my writing game, my main content of choice (and that of my clients and students) continues to be podcasting.
As Jay writes, when it comes to thinking about your content:
“…you are in competition with every single other person competing to be on the finite list of things your desired audience can fit into their lives.”
The key takeaway for me in this edition of his newsletter, and the silver lining in all of this, is that you don’t have to be the best to earn your audience’s highly valuable and limited time, it’s better instead to be their favorite.
“The impact of our work is directly proportional to its value + its originality.”
Yes, you might feel the need to ‘just get something out there’, but my ask for you this week is to slow down instead.
And while you might not have the luxury of being 30,000 feet above the Atlantic Ocean with no WiFi service, you can still make time to ask yourself, PRIOR to hitting that ‘Record’ or ‘Send’ button, whether what you’re creating is empowering your reader/viewer/listener with content that is insightful.
It’s something I never want to lose sight of.
It’s YOU I’m writing for.
YOU inspire me to provide insightful content that makes you think.
And that’s not something I’ll ever take for granted.
Now go create something insightful for YOUR audience.
with gratitude,
🙏 Harry
