Of Course You're Burnt Out, What Did You Expect?

A Life Worth Living | Jan 28, 2023

Every Saturday I share a story about my life in a way that you can hopefully relate to. I believe we are all here to share our journey, both the highs and the lows, as this is how we collectively raise the consciousness of the planet. If anything resonates with you, please share!

In December of 2021, I ran out of gas.

It was one of many moments when I felt particularly drained and was having trouble remaining focused.

At the time I merely attributed it to having low energy, but the truth of the matter was much clearer.

I was burned out.

Follow The Numbers

ConvertKit recently published their State of the Creator Economy report, and there was one statistic that jumped out at me:

‍‍61% of creators experienced burnout in 2021.

Burnout is defined as a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It presents itself as a feeling of overwhelm, being emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands.

Sound familiar?

What was so interesting was the chart that listed the main reasons for burnout. A few of these hit a bit too close to home.

This is an ongoing area of personal growth for me, and some days are better than others. Here are three things that have been helpful for me as I start a new year.

1. Move Your Body

When I get into a work sprint (and especially if I’m jammin’ to a great house set on Soundcloud), I tend to lose track of time and don’t do the best job of moving my body often.

As home is now Minneapolis, I frequently use the excuse of it being too cold to be outside. But that doesn’t stop my lovely partner from providing the necessary kick in the butt to walk our dog. And I’m always feeling better afterwards.

One recent purchase that has been helpful and fun is the Oculus 2 VR headset. After 12 minutes of all-out boxing on FitXR or Supernatural, I’ve definitely worked up a sweat (and surprisingly sore the next day).

2. Ask for Help

Since starting my entrepreneurial journey in 2015, I’ve always been reminded of a Jim Rohn quote I found early on:

You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.

It’s important to build and grow your peer network. When times get tough or you need a fresh perspective, having a support group is priceless.

3. Get a Hobby

When we get into entrepreneur mode, we’ll often feel like there’s not enough time in the day to get it all done. We burn the midnight oil and ourselves out as well! It’s during times like these that I think back to some early advice my old boss gave me, “At the end of the day, we’re not saving lives.”

If you have a hobby that you’ve neglected, pick it back up! A few that I’m working on for 2023: learning the piano, electronic music production, and dj’ing vinyl gigs around town.

Suffice it to say that, by no means do I have it all figured out. But I have realized I don’t want to keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Because as cliche as it sounds, it is the definition of insanity.

It’s important to realize that every morning, when you get out of bed, it is another opportunity to make better choices.

With gratitude,

Harry
