Never Underestimate the Power of Choosing the Right Name

A Life Worth Living | Mar 18, 2022

Every Saturday I share a story about my life in a way that you can hopefully relate to. I believe we are all here to share our journey, both the highs and the lows, as this is how we collectively raise the consciousness of the planet. If anything resonates with you, please share! πŸ™ (5 minute read)

What's in a name?

Have you ever been in a crowded room, or a party, and heard someone mention your name?

You turn to look and it ends up that they were calling out a friend that happened to have your same name.

It's human nature to react to the sound of our name. It's been referred to as the most beautiful sound in the world.

With a name like Harry, I always feel a strange connection to other Harrys I see mentioned online {or in Netflix documentaries πŸ‘‘).

Heck, I even changed my preferred razor to Harry's for that same reason!

What's In a Name?

Podcast titles are no different.

If you're a soon-to-be or veteran podcaster, there's a special joy and pride you have in the name of your show. It's your baby, your personal creation.

When I first launched Podcast Junkies, I remember setting up a Google Alert for that phrase, just so I could see if anyone else was using that name, but also to see if it happened to get mentioned out there in the Podosphere.

By the way, I highly recommend you do the same.

Here's the thing:

Not every podcast name adequately describes the show in a way that would entice a potential listener to subscribe. I recently posted this on Twitter.

Some of the show names dropped into the thread include Dog Works Radio, Thorn In The USA, and MedusPod. Any idea what these shows are about?

Me either.

You'll enjoy a few of my fun responses if you click on the thread, but in all seriousness, it's a very important first step to consider when creating a new show.

It's the first thing we work on when we take on a new client. What you want to think through is a term that people are searching for to solve a specific pain point.

Build Your Audience From Day One

When launching my second show, Vertical Farming Podcast, I knew early on that nobody knew who I was in the indoor farming space. So why would I make it harder for people to find me?

I could have called it something witty like Indoor Talk with Harry, or Leafy Greens Gab, but that made zero sense to me.

I put my Marketing hat on and called it what it is. A podcast about vertical farming. Thankfully verticalfarmingpodcast.com was available. If you Google those 3 words, "vertical farming podcast" it's the first listing that comes up. That was intentional.

I shared the full story and blueprint of the success I've had with that show ($80K+ in sponsorship revenue) at Podcast Movement last year. The team was kind enough to make that talk public, which you can watch here.

I've submitted a new talk for this year's show in Denver, where I'll share the latest updates and wins that have come since last year. Fingers crossed it will get accepted!

Seek and You Shall Find

As the show grows, I constantly hear back from people who are discovering me for the first time:

"I was looking for a show about vertical farming and yours was the first one that came up."

Bingo!

Apple Podcasts:

Spotify Search:

As an added bonus, Cultivation Elevated is actually a client of our agency FullCast, so it's nice to see them showing up as well!

I think you get the point.

While my focus is on podcasting and supporting our clients creating new shows, this can be applied to any new project you're looking to put a name to.

Don't make your future audience work harder than they need to to find you.

Keep It Simple Sunshine β˜€οΈ

πŸ™ with gratitude,

Harry
