Have you ever fallen off of a horse?
Me neither.
By the way, I was curious what ChatGPT thought:
It is impossible to determine the exact number of people who have fallen off horses throughout all of human history. Horses have been used as a means of transportation, in warfare, for sport, and in various other activities for thousands of years. Given the vast span of time and the widespread use of horses, it is safe to assume that the number of individuals who have fallen off horses is significant.
So when you hear this phrase, what do you think to say next?
Get back on that horse!
I don’t know about you, but if I actually fell off of a real horse, I’m fairly certain that I would not be getting back on so soon. 😂
All this to say, I screwed up, f—d up, dropped the ball.
Never mind, no point in beating myself up. I was attending IndoorAgTech in NYC last Thu/Fri and wasn’t able to get the email out as planned.
That kinda sux, given I had a 33-week streak going. But as it turns out, the weekend turned into something special.
A Spectacular Breakthrough
After the conference I headed north to Yonkers, NY, the city in which I grew up. I wanted to spend a few days with my parents, who both turn 80 this year.
Having been born in El Salvador and growing up in the US since the age of 1, I appreciate the joy that is a bilingual household.
The thing is, my dad wanted us to focus on learning English. Ultimately my Spanish suffered, but I definitely learned enough to be conversational. I’d be remiss if I didn’t credit my Colombian ex-wife as well, who thankfully helped me improve my Spanish. 🙏
Every time I visit my folks, I speak to my mom primarily in Spanish, and my dad in English. So there we were, sitting at the counter of my childhood home, engaging in small talk.
My parents have an Alexa, and I thought to ask my mom who, when she was growing up, was the most famous singer in El Salvador. That’s easy she said, “Tony Acosta”. Her favorite song from his was ‘Amamos’, which roughly translates to “we love”.
As the song was playing, vague memories of hearing this at an old family party began to make their way into my head (and heart).
I then came up with the idea of telling my dad that, for the next hour, we would only speak in Spanish.
I had no idea what would happen next.
Maybe it was the beer we were sharing at dinner (or the edible I might have been testing out), but it only took about 10 minutes for things to get deep. My dad began sharing some incredible stories.
At that moment, I was extremely grateful to my 9 years podcasting experience. I began asking my dad open ended questions, and saw him in a completely new light.
Suffice it to say, there were many tears shed, and questions about my generational trauma were definitely answered. I truly felt like a weight had been lifted from my heart.
So much came up during those 2 hours, and I’m still processing…
But if there’s one takeaway, it’s this:
If there’s someone in your life who you want to go deeper with, don’t wait.
We live a truly short existence here.
Let’s make the most of it.
🙏 with gratitude,
Harry
