For those that are active in social media, it was hard to avoid any mention of Meta’s new platform, Threads.
If you’re not that active on social, it’s essentially a Twitter clone where the focus is more on the words than the photos, memes or inspirational quotes which have become popular on Instagram.
I dove in head first as I was intrigued by the thought of a social platform whose focus seemed to be more on conversations.
I also received an important reminder from another podcaster I follow, Pat Flynn (also a past guest on Podcast Junkies). As Pat mentioned in his newsletter,
“Threads is also a way to communicate on social media with people who already follow you on social media.”
Total transparency, my threads are not getting that much engagement, and that’s OK. I’m using it more as a way to get thoughts out of my head.
As a chronic over-thinker, and someone who always has a ton of ideas rattling around in my mind, it’s been nice to have a way to channel that energy.
That said, I am reminded of the saying, “Don’t build your house on rented land.”
If you are a creative playing in the digital space, this may not be new news for you but it bears repeating.
While Threads is the hot app of the month, like all other social platforms, there is always the risk that the algorithm can change, or the app itself can fold or fizzle out (Clubhouse anyone?)
As is obvious to you, my lovely subscriber, I’m a big fan of creating that 1:1 direct connection with my audience, and the best way to do that is with an email list.
Given where you’re reading this, you probably already know that Substack is a pretty easy way to set this up, but I also send out these weekly letters to a broader distribution using beehiv. Check ‘em both out + see which is a better fit.
So if working out that writing muscle is a goal of yours, Threads might be an easy way to get you started down that path. Connect with me there.
One important point to keep in mind. Your Threads account is linked to your existing Instagram account. So if you decide after a few weeks that you no longer want to be active on Threads and delete your account, your IG will be deleted as well! So thread lightly. 😆
One additional tip for Threads is to actively mute any accounts that you’re not vibing with. Whether it’s because the content is off-putting, or it’s obvious all they’re doing is reposting from other social platforms like IG. I’ve muted dozens of accounts already and my feed is already more inspiring.
I realize most of you have a full plate as it is, and don’t need any more distractions, so I’ll advise you to check in with yourself, give it a peek, and see what you think of the vibe.
🙏 with gratitude,
Harry
