Every letter I share a story about my life in a way that you can hopefully relate to. I believe we are all here to share our journey, both the highs and the lows, as this is how we collectively raise the consciousness of the planet. If anything resonates with you, please share! 🙏
That subject line was difficult to type out, for sure.
It’s Thursday, July 4th 2024 as I write this and I’m painfully aware of the fact that I haven’t published a new letter in over a month.
Thankfully a confluence of events has inspired me to pick up the proverbial pen once again.
I reconnected with an old friend and he reminded me that it had been a while since he’d seen a post.
On Substack, I can see that people have subscribed to my newsletter, and with each notification, the anxiety increased. Here are people that have expressed an interest in reading my stuff, and they’re getting nothing from me!
Since launching this series in October of 2022, I had posted at least once per month and had a corresponding folder on my laptop or the materials I needed for the letter that month. So it was with a bit of sadness that I realized that yet another streak had been broken. I hadn’t posted anything for the entire month of June. 😢
To top it off, I received my monthly update from beehiv
The post also included a most appropriate gif, which I’m pasting here for added dramatic effect.
(btw, if you haven’t watched it already, Schitt’s Creek is highly recommended)
As far as the reasons (or to put it bluntly, the excuses I’ve made) for why I haven’t been publishing recently, there are several.
On the home front there has been a lot going on. Big-time spring cleaning which brings with it its own set of emotions.
The emotional, operational and financial challenges of running my own podcast agency.
I could go on and on, but you get the picture.
Part of the credit for getting back on track goes to a new accountability group I joined this week.
We connect on Zoom and work through 90-minute sprints, making sure our phones are in Do Not Disturb mode and even more importantly, we’re not task switching.
In the past, I’ve prided myself at my ability to multi-task, thinking it was some sort of superpower (newsflash: it’s not).
Science has shown that when you break a streak, it has a cascading effect on the rest of your life.
As I’m putting this letter together I realize how much goes into writing it and how easily it is to be thrown off track by a new tab, or a ping in my brain that I need to call that person about that thing. It takes a considerable amount of focus and I’m almost through the 90 minutes!
I attach all sorts of labels to challenging tasks and make excuses for not getting them done because they’re ‘too hard’ or attribute it to ‘falling off the wagon’. The truth is, when I don’t have the proper support system in place I can very easily fall into a victim mindset or blame outside circumstances.
At the end of the day, they’re ALL just excuses for not getting my shit together and doing the thing.
I’m incredibly grateful for the discipline, community & support that this group provides and while I’m only on Day 4, I can already see the benefits.
It’s good to be back here with you, and for the new folks, welcome! You can expect to hear more regularly from me. A bi-weekly cadence seems much more manageable, so we’ll start there.
What have you been putting off recently? Might it be time to get back on the horse?
With gratitude,
🙏 Harry
