It was so compelling, and intriguing, and mysterious. You mean to tell me if I sit in stillness long enough, I’ll become enlightened!? Well sign me up.

I was diving into all the stories of these ancient sages and mystics who would sit for hours or days on end on the path to enlightenment. I mean Buddhism itself starts with the story of the Buddha who sat for countless days under the Bodhi tree until he finally achieved enlightenment.

Perhaps the pinnacle of intensity, dedication and commitment was the 6am physical practices all in the name of awakening and enlightenment.

In hindsight and if I’m being honest that was part of the allure. It’s no accident then that, a few years later, I would be drawn to an organization called EnlightenNext!

The difference now, 20 years later is that I have much more grace with myself and my WHY is now clearer. I want to be more present in my relationships and with those I care about in my life.

I will tell you that this was something I didn’t always get right in past relationships and friendships and ended up paying the price for that non-presence. But with age, as they say, comes wisdom.

I recently completed a 22-day meditation streak. I’ve committed to sitting for at least 20 minutes each morning and this time feels different because I finally have a system that works.

Most people experience meditation backwards because they don’t have their WHY clearly defined. And that clarity about WHY led me to discover the real killer of meditation practices: perfectionism.

The Perfectionism Trap That Kills Your Practice

People worry about the most random things when it comes to meditation.

“Do I need to be sitting cross-legged on a meditation cushion?”

“Is a candle required?”

“Do I need to completely ‘clear my mind’ before starting?”

The short answer to these is “No”.

The most important thing to do is sit and close your eyes. It seems so simple, but it’s effective. Remember we’re playing the long game here.

Since it’s January, think about all the people dusting off their sneakers and training to run their first 5K.

They get fired up and suddenly, this is the year they’re crossing the finish line at the New York City Marathon in October. We’ve all been there. What most people forget is that progress doesn’t start with a marathon. It starts with a walk. Then a jog. Then a run. Only after that does the marathon make sense.

I fell into this exact trap. I attended a 10-day silent retreat which gave me opportunities to practice really long sits, some several hours long. Towards the end of the retreat, I even managed an overnight meditation. To be honest I don’t know how long I was meditating and at some point I did lose track of time. It was wonderful to experience.

When I returned home, I thought my daily practice needed to match that intensity. That was an unrealistic expectation, and one that was hard to replicate in the ‘real world’.

My experience over the years has been one of stops and starts and, while I never stopped fully ‘showing up’, I would pick it up and drop it as the need arose.

What’s different now is that I've learned to work WITH resistance, not against it.

Resistance Is The Practice

In the process of meditation the thoughts that come up are one form of resistance. They fill your mind and make you think you’re not doing this right and the point of meditation is to clear the mind and my mind is not clear so I’m not doing it right and this is so dumb and why did I even try and the last thing I feel like doing is sitting here and I have so many things to take care of this morning why did I even feel like I had time to sit here.

Sound familiar? The reason you’ve given up is sometimes not even known to you. It’s this clear feeling that you want to do this thing (meditate). But something is keeping you from it. You may not even be able to put a finger on it, but it clearly feels like an immovable object. Steven Pressfield in his book The War of Art would call this ‘resistance.’

The racing thoughts aren't a sign you're failing. They're proof you're doing something important. The practice isn't achieving a clear mind - it's noticing the resistance and sitting anyway.

Once you’re able to put a name to the thing standing in between you and your next meditation, you’re able to lessen its power over you. It’s a lifelong process and there will be hurdles along the way to be sure. The key is having a system that works. This is one such system.

Your 2-Minute Non-Negotiable System

The goal with this exercise is to get started right away. I’ll include links at the bottom of the post for anything mentioned.

Principle 1: Protect the practice

This one is key and SO HARD to do. When you wake up in the morning, even though you’ve grabbed your phone to start the day, resist the urge to check your emails or look at your calendar or even worse, your socials. Trust me, there is nothing more dangerous than thinking your will power (when you’re starting) is strong enough to battle these incredibly persuasive algorithms. Do yourself a favor. Give this gift to yourself. You deserve it.

And first thing is key. No ‘making a cup of coffee’, etc. Your very first action is this gift to yourself. And doing it the same time each day is key.

Some other tips that help: if your mornings are particularly chaotic, whether work, family or kid-related, then make it a point to wake up 15-30 minutes earlier!

Principle 2: Remove friction before you start

Don’t overthink this, you don’t need fancy tools. I use the Insight Timer app. Use what works for you. And don’t feel the need to use all the bells and whistles. The key thing here is to add a widget to your home screen so it’s the first thing you see when you grab your phone in the morning.

To prepare I’d download the app so you’re familiar with it and set up predefined duration for meditation. Insight Time also allows you to set a halfway-mark chime which is helpful as you get into longer sits and the mind starts wandering and wondering (how much time is left, did I even start the timer, etc). It’s also helpful to put your phone in do-not-disturb mode as I’ve been interrupted in the past by an incoming call.

Principle 3: Set a laughably small threshold

Start very small. I know I said sitting for a minute is fine, but let’s start with 2 minutes. Yup, that’s it. Sure you can have a 5 or 10 minute goal, but have a low enough threshold that you know you can commit to. Feeling rushed this particular morning? Go to the bathroom, keep the lights closed and get your 2 minutes in.

The key thing here is to make this a non-negotiable. Your goal is 5 minutes, but your non-negotiable is 2 minutes, every morning.

Principle 4: Build the ritual

My process: I get up, grab my phone, head to the den, put on my noise cancelling headphones (not required but definitely helps), sit on my meditation cushion, open Insight Timer, hit start, close my eyes. Rinse and repeat.

This exact system got me to 22 straight days of at least 20 minutes. Not through willpower or discipline, but through designing a system that was so frictionless I had no excuse not to show up. And yes, while I’m now at 20 minutes, there were days leading up to the streak when all I could manage was 2 minutes.

I hope this letter inspires you to either try meditating for the first time or revisit it if it’s something you’ve tried in the past and gave up on.

My goal here was not to overwhelm you but remind you that you can do this. The key is to get clear on your WHY.

Why would a meditation practice be helpful for you in your life at this present moment?

Can you commit to 2 minutes?

Is it worth it?

Only you can answer those questions.

Twenty years ago, I was chasing enlightenment. Today, I’m just showing up for 20 minutes every morning.

It was a term I’d used—and heard—among my podcast peeps. It felt right. A word that captured the energy of this industry. A portmanteau of podcasting and atmosphere, if you will.

At the time, I was in awe of the sheer number of tools and services being built to support podcasters. There were a few decent directories out there, but I kept thinking:

What if I built the galaxy’s most comprehensive collection of companies supporting podcasters—big and small?

How hard could that be? 😉

That first year, I was accepted into On Deck’s inaugural No Code cohort, where I built my first MVP (Minimum Viable Product for my non-entrepreneurial friends). I stitched together an Airtable and connected it to a Webflow front end.

It worked.
Success!

Little did I know what was coming.

I shared it with a few friends, gathered feedback, and about a year later found a great technical partner. Together, we ported the site over to Bubble and got the basic functionality live.

And then… not much progress.

Like many side projects, it never quite became the priority it needed to be. We gave it our best, but momentum stalled. Eventually, we parted ways amicably, and I took the site back into my own hands.

Which meant… living with Bubble. And finding help.

A handful of not-so-cheap Fiverr developer sessions later, I was inching closer to what I’d envisioned—but it was slow going.

Then, in early 2025, the vibe-coding wave hit.

“You can prompt an entire website into existence?!”

I dove head-first into tools like Lovable and Bolt and was blown away. Beautiful sites. Minutes, not months.

Uh-mazing.

Until it wasn’t.

Digging into the forums, I learned what many others had discovered: pretty on the surface, but underneath… spaghetti code.

I was devastated.
So close.

Then came a moment of pure kismet.

The Every.to newsletter announced a Zoom call about a new tool: Claude Code.

You may already know Anthropic’s Claude, but what surprised me was Claude Code—a tool that runs directly in your Mac Terminal (think DOS prompt for Mac; basically the engine room of your computer).

Suddenly, I could take the vibe-coded spaghetti and rebuild it properly. Same look and feel—but with structure, discipline, and real software fundamentals.

The early weeks were bananas.

I was coding at the speed of thought.

For years, I’d been handcuffed by my inability to translate UX/UI ideas from my head into something a developer could fully realize. It was always close… but never quite it.

Now it was.

As progress accelerated, I felt confident enough to relaunch the site in beta and share it with friends at Podcast Movement, where I received invaluable feedback.

But the most meaningful moment came during the Podosphere 2.0 meet-and-greet, led by Justin Jackson of Transistor.fm.

Tragically, it was also the last time those of us in the room would share time with podcast OG Todd Cochrane, who passed away just days later. RIP Todd.

Justin offered thoughtful feedback and, most memorably, suggested I explore Agent OS, created by Brian Casel.

I’ll spare the deeper technical details, but in short: it gave me spec-driven guardrails—structure for navigating highly productive but sometimes meandering AI-assisted coding sessions.

That was the final piece.

A second set of eyes.
Validation.
And a mirror for my blind spots.

So… is the site ready for prime time?

Honestly? No.

But that’s the curse of every creator—deciding when something is ready to be seen, warts and all. I learned this years ago in electronic music production:

It will never be “done.”

On October 10th, I celebrated by 55th birthday with the sound of a drum being banged outside my door. It was our group’s wake up call.

I was on Day 2 of the Men of Movement led by Mike Salemi. I was grateful for a comfy bed and a great night of sleep. The most noticeable thing was the fact that I didn’t immediately reach for my phone, as I had turned it off the previous afternoon, knowing it wouldn’t be back on until Sunday. Old habits die hard, and it was telling just how much my instincts were to ‘check in’.

I quickly dressed and made my way down to our meeting center. Over the course of three and a half days with 15 other men, we would do the physical, emotional and inner work to find our edges.

Each day began with a round of Chi Gong, led Dr. Jonny Suarez. I had forgotten how much I missed the martial arts. Years ago, while living in Atlanta, I had taken up Wing Chun Kung Fu and Jeet Kune Do, and remember it as an incredible experience. I even made it up to Green Belt in Kung Fu. So it was a potent reminder of the importance of finding and cultivating one’s own energy center.

In addition to the Chi Gong, we spent each day meditating. While I’ve been cultivating a meditation practice for decades, this was a new opportunity to make it more intentional. We were asked to try new versions of meditation where we would either see, hear or feel what was coming through and name it accordingly—”see” if a vision came through, “hear” if we heard something, or “feel” if a feeling arose. Breath by breath. If nothing arose, then we would simply say “rest.”

There was a vibrant mix of learning and doing, and we had the ability to work with one of the facilitators on our Archetypes. This particular exercise is based on the work of Caroline Myss who has created a deck to help determine which Archetypes are most active in your psyche, and how they can lead you to achieve greater insights into your life.

The session was led by Greg Schmaus, who guided us to pull 12 of the cards that we most resonated with and then in subsequent sessions, ‘cast’ the cards across our wheel of 12 houses. These include Personality, Life Values, Home, Spirituality, Relationships, Highest Potential, and more. Using my intuition to draw these was a powerful experience and it was uncanny how many of the cards ended up in just the right house.

What struck me most was the 10th house—the house of Highest Potential. The card I pulled was the Gambler. This speaks to the concept of trusting my intuition and betting on myself. As an entrepreneur, this resonated deeply: the idea of committing to a process, delaying gratification, and understanding that this is my purpose.

The work we did was just the starting point and I’ll be exploring my layout in detail over the next year, working on one house each month. Each archetype-house combination is an invitation to dive deeper for self-reflection.

Through a storytelling exercise on Day 2, I was able to experience a cathartic release, thanks to Mike’s guidance. It was a reminder of how I’ve carried childhood wounds into my present day, but that those events shouldn’t, and don’t, define me. I was grateful for the opportunity to share my story in a room with other men who were there to support and listen.

All of this work led up to a powerful Day 3: the sweat lodge. While I’ve had the experience of a sauna followed by a cold plunge (thanks Minnesota), I really had no idea what to expect.

We started the day by driving up to Tim Corcoran’s property, The Headwaters Outdoor School, which sits on a spectacular 32 acres on Mt. Shasta. What a great feeling to drink pure spring water directly from the creek that flowed down from the mountain!

By the way I highly recommend you subscribe to Mike’s podcast, The King Within (which I’m helping produce!), where he interviews Tim for an upcoming episode. Tim’s stories are wild.

With the guidance of Tim’s grandson, TJ, and Xander—both caretakers of the land—we learned how to start a fire from scratch and the reverence they hold for the land and the process of selecting the stones that make their way into the fire, where they heat up for several hours.

The sweat lodge itself is constructed from wood from the site and covered with tarps. We proceeded to crawl in, 16 of us, and sit around the fire pit. For each round, the now glowing red stones were ceremoniously brought in and welcomed with a greeting of “welcome stone!”

The flap to the outside was then closed and we were submerged into complete darkness with only the glowing stones as our light source. Tim sang songs for each round and did some drumming. Each round was subsequently hotter, and suffice it to say I wouldn’t have made it through without the support of the men in that lodge. Thankfully, midway through the four rounds we had the opportunity to take a dip in the 40-degree creek, which was incredibly refreshing.

The last two rounds were the toughest 20 minutes of recent memory. Just when I thought I wasn’t going to be able to take another minute, Tim shouted “open up” and the flap mercifully allowed the light and cool air to begin streaming in.

Given the size of the opening, we had to crawl out on all fours—it was akin to the feeling of being reborn. I crawled over to an open patch of cold dirt and proceeded to lay on my back to cool off with mother earth. As I stared up, all I could see was a ring of pine trees and had no other thought at that moment but immense gratitude.

Life has its challenges—the hard days, the ups and downs, the moments when you feel like quitting and wonder what it’s all for. But it’s experiences like this that remind me of the power of nature, of community, of breaking bread with men who have committed to spend time away from their families for the purpose of living better lives.

When was the last time you truly disconnected? Not just put your phone on silent, but turned it off completely for days? When did you last sit in a room with others and share what you’ve been carrying?

We convince ourselves we don’t have time for transformation, that our daily routines are too important to step away from. But what if the most important thing you could do is exactly that—step away, find your people, and remember what it feels like to be fully alive?

You don’t need to find a sweat lodge on Mt. Shasta (though I highly recommend it). You just need to give yourself permission to seek something transformative. To turn off your phone. To find or create community. To bet on yourself like the Gambler. To be reborn.

Harry finally decided he’s a writer again :)

I wish there was a simple way to explain the long absence but suffice it to say there has been a lot going on in my world.

Ups and downs to be sure. And sometimes its in those grooves that I feel the least amount of creative energy.

I wonder if the most prolific writers go through stretches where even they don’t feel like writing?

Yes I share content on my socials here and there, but the kind of writing that makes it’s way to this newsletter is different.

It has to come from my heart (and not my head) and sometimes that takes months or longer for me to get out of my own way.

It usually takes a change of scenery or environment, and that’s exactly what happened a week and and half ago.

I was invited by a long time friend of mine, Krisstina Wise, to attend a 3-day event in Park City Utah. She was bringing together a group of her close friends to talk about business, health and investing.

Pre-pandemic, I used to attend these types of events frequently. It’s how I’ve met some wonderful people, some of whom I remained friends with to this day.

So it’s not like I wasn’t aware of the upside, but I was thinking about the ‘hassle’ of travel, and spending that time away from home and my business.

Classic HD overthinking. I’m glad Krisstina convinced me otherwise.

So I booked my flight to Park City, Utah. If you’ve never been, it’s definitely a touristy ski-town ($22 hamburgers, anyone?)

The drive from the airport was definitely beautiful and well worth it though. Stunning scenery!

Without getting into a day-by-day replay, suffice it to say…

Wow.

Just... wow.

The caliber of humans I met over those 3 days left me speechless at times.

Business owners doing incredible things. People with purpose. Individuals creating meaningful impact.

You know that feeling when you’re around someone who makes you want to level up your entire existence?

Now multiply that by a roomful.

The subject line is a reference to a Jim Rohn that’s been following me around for years:

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

I used to think it was just a nice motivational saying.

Now I know it’s a warning.

And an invitation.

I had forgotten how much I missed these type of meetups.

Most days, Zoom calls are fine, but there’s something irreplaceable about being physically in a room with people who challenge your thinking.

People who make you uncomfortable with how much more is possible.

People who see potential in you that you’ve been blind to.

I left with this stark realization: I’ve been playing smaller than I need to.

Maybe you have too?

The truth is, most people adapt to our environments without even noticing. I’ve been guilty of that for sure.

If everyone around you is content with “good enough,” guess what becomes your standard?

But when you surround yourself with excellence, mediocrity becomes painful and growth becomes inevitable.

I’m curious, who are your five people? The ones shaping your ambitions, your standards, your beliefs about what’s possible?

Are they pulling you forward or holding you in place?

The weekend was my wake-up call to intentionally curate my circle again.

To seek out the people who make me uncomfortable with their excellence.

Because that discomfort is the birthplace of growth. And I’m ready to grow again.

Passion? Is that the right word?

Maybe it was more of an interest, really. When I was younger and still living at home, I’d borrow cookbooks from the library and try out recipes at home.

Most of them got a thumbs-up from the family. I tried my hand at baking, chocolates, Italian and French cuisine, and whatever else piqued my curiosity.

I remember one time preparing a particularly fancy dish and convincing my folks that the meal would be best served with some accompanying classical music. The things parents do for their children!

As I got older, I found less time to dabble in the culinary arts, but every now and then the muse would strike.

During the height of a Tim Ferriss wave, I was reading everything he was publishing, including The 4-Hour Chef. Which of course meant buying a bunch of new cooking tools and discovering a newfound appreciation for the cast iron skillet.

Growing up in a Salvadoran household, it wasn’t a pan I was familiar with. We were more of a tortillas, beans, and rice kitchen.

As far as culinary inspiration, I was a big fan of all the Anthony Bourdain shows (RIP). When Netflix launched their Chef’s Table series, I was all in. They definitely nailed the concept of “food-porn” (apologies for the implied vulgarity, but it sorta nails the vibe).

Their mix of music, videography, and storytelling is superb. Each chef’s unique skills are highlighted brilliantly. I’ve always been drawn to the meticulous preparation that goes into these dishes—it speaks to my slightly OCD, neurodivergent tendencies for sure!

Now that I think of it, there are a few movies and documentaries I love, that capture the energy of food as an event. Some of my favorites, in no particular order: Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Big Night (with Stanley Tucci), Chef (Jon Favreau & John Leguizamo), the TV series The Bear, and I’m sure a few others I’m forgetting.

I’m fairly certain I was a chef or restaurant owner in a previous life—there’s always been a draw to that vibe.

Recently, I discovered the magic of sourdough bread. On a trip with my partner last year to visit one of her college friends, I happened upon a few books on baking that caught my eye. Thankfully, I had enough downtime to read through a few and began my bread-making journey.

As it turns out, that curiosity in the kitchen started spilling over into other parts of my life as well.

My partner and I have to a plan to be more self-sustaining. As a result we now have five chickens, our own well, and this year we planted a sizable garden.

Yes, it’s a lot of work and can seem overwhelming at times, but I keep reminding myself that I’m rewiring my long-ingrained “city-guy” tendencies.

Back to the bread…

The one thing that separates sourdough from other bread-making is the need for cultivating a sourdough starter. It’s a small mix of water and flour that you let sit over the course of a few days. When it’s nice and sour (you’ll know by the smell), you then use that starter to make your bread.

I’m greatly oversimplifying the process. In actuality, there’s a pre-ferment phase, followed by several rounds of kneading, more proofing, and then high-temp baking.

It’s the science of it that draws me in—the need to follow precise steps. As you might imagine, with all these moving parts, there’s a lot that can go wrong.

My first few loaves came out OK, and I felt I had a good routine. So when I recently discovered a company that makes ancient grain flour, I was excited to try it!

If you’ve ever traveled to Europe and indulged in bread, pizza, croissants, or any of the other ridiculously delicious foods found on that continent, you might’ve noticed a difference in how you feel were you to indulge in these foods state-side. To use a technical term, less shitty.

Why is that? I’ve come to learn over the years just how bad our wheat is here in the U.S. We have companies like Monsanto to thank for that. It’s no secret how much glyphosate has made its way into our food system and wreaked havoc on our health.

It was no surprise to learn that these chemicals are banned in Europe. Smart move.

Thankfully, more and more companies are doing their part to bring us back to food in its natural form. That’s why I was excited to discover Sunrise Flour Mill. They’ve developed a version of Single Source Organic Heritage Wheat Flour. I highly recommend you watch their origin story video on their About page, very inspiring!

I proceeded to order some of their starter and bread flour and was eager to see how it would turn out.

Well, let’s just say… it didn’t go quite as planned. After several beautiful loaves, this most recent one resulted in what I can only describe as an Unidentified Baking Object, or UBO. In other words: #NoBueno.

Granted, the steps were different than I was used to, but I didn’t even come close on this one.

Needless to say, I was a bit bummed to have spent a week and a half prepping this new starter and following all the steps, only to end up with this disappointing doorstop.

It took a few days of moping before I returned to my original recipe—and I was happy to see my tried-and-true loaf come out of the oven a few days ago.

What I learned from this recent experience is that things don’t always turn out the way you planned, even if you think you’re doing everything absolutely right. It’s frustrating for sure.

“But I followed all the instructions!”

Yeah, I get it. But sometimes life wants to remind us that even the best-laid plans go awry.

And that’s OK. It’s not your fault.

And there’s always tomorrow.

I hope this inspires you to revive a long-forgotten hobby or passion.

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s to enjoy the mess, the learning, and maybe even the occasional UBO.

Recognizing the Voice You’ve Been Ignoring

Ever had a thought so vivid you felt it in your chest, only to watch it slip away because you couldn’t shape the words?

That knot of frustration.

The inability to clearly articulate thoughts and ideas effectively.

That’s the type of shit that can leave you feeling unseen.

Let me know if this sounds familiar:

You scroll through social feeds

You watch friends and colleagues speak with confidence and wonder why you’re not able to share your perspective so effortlessly.

And you wonder if this is how it’s always going to be.

When I started podcasting in 2014, I learned a lesson that felt almost counterintuitive: ordinary voices carry extraordinary power.

I’ll never forget the moment that Gary Leland shared a childhood moment where he was playing with a friend in their neighborhood. At some point, they stumbled upon a gun under the seat of a family member’s unlocked car.

Gary proceeded, as kids do, to play cops and robbers with his friend. He pointed the gun at his childhood buddy and pulled the trigger.

The gun was loaded.

But the lock was on and the gun just clicked.

I can still vividly remember my experience of listening to him tell that story. I was screaming inside my head, “just the f— up! do NOT interrupt, let him finish!”

Once Gary finished telling the story, he paused. Then he said “You know? I don’t think I ever shared that story with anyone!”

It was in that moment I began to understand how to find your authentic voice, not by polishing every sentence, but by honoring the small truths you already carry.

Stories matter because they awaken presence. As Eckhart Tolle suggests, true expression arises when you release the need for perfection and instead observe your thoughts without judgment.

That shift from fixating on performance to gentle curiosity transforms self-doubt into discovery.

When Every Attempt to Share Falls Flat

When it comes to sharing your stories, let me guess:

You rehearse your ideas on the commute home, draft paragraphs in a notes app, or stare at a blank document—only to freeze when the moment arrives.

You share a brief insight on social media and watch the notification count sit at zero. Each stumble feels like a confirmation of self-doubt, making the very act of sharing feel futile.

• You feel tongue-tied in meetings while colleagues articulate complex ideas without hesitation.

• You draft a blog post outlining your vision, but the words feel hollow and you abandon it.

• You start a difficult conversation with a loved one, only to bail halfway through.

• You journal faithfully, but the pages become another to-do, piling up without ever giving you clarity.

Deepak Chopra reminds us that creativity flows when we connect with our deeper self rather than striving to prove something.

Yet this inner connection can feel blocked when every attempt to share falls flat, reinforcing the belief that your voice doesn’t matter. In truth, that blockage is often a lack of felt safety rather than lack of content.

You’re Not Broken, You’re Just Unsure Where to Begin

Let’s honor the real doubts you carry.

You may worry this is “another trend you will never stick with,” or think, “I don’t have the time or skills to do this right.”

Those questions—“Do people genuinely care about what I have to say?”—are themselves signs of your deep commitment to authenticity.

Instead of critiquing yourself for hesitation, treat your curiosity as fuel.

Ask yourself:

What anecdotes do I revisit in conversation?

Which moments in my life still stir emotion when I recall them?

Finding your authentic voice begins with that simple inquiry.

It’s not about crafting the perfect speech but about allowing yourself to explore what truly matters to you.

Consider a practice inspired by Chopra’s emphasis on self-reflection: spend 5 minutes each morning observing a fleeting memory or idea, then speak it aloud into your phone.

No editing, no expectation. Over time you’ll notice recurring themes. Those are the seeds of your most resonant stories.

Imagine Your Stories Sparking Real Connection

Now imagine a different scene: you share a simple anecdote in a casual chat or a brief voice note, and someone responds, “That really resonated with me.”

In that instant you witness the ripple effect of your experiences.

You forge deeper relationships by speaking from the heart rather than reading from a script.

Continue the momentum by recording five-minute sessions that capture genuine reflections.

You’ll discover that what you deemed mundane, your commute routine or a childhood memory, becomes the catalyst for someone else’s insight.

I’ve seen it happen and I know it’s real.

Unleashing your authentic voice means trusting that your history, your quirks, and even your hesitations. Why? Because these are the very qualities that create a bond with others.

A Moment to Notice What’s Already Within You

You’ve been sharing your truth all along. You simply haven’t recognized its power. Grant yourself permission to speak up.

• Affirmation: You have inspired someone today simply by being you.

• Micro-Observation: Notice the story you recount most often without planning.

• Anchor Truth: Your everyday experiences carry more value than you realize.

Ask these questions:

• What if the next person who listens needs exactly what you have lived?

• How would your day shift if you trusted your own voice as truth?

• When was the last time you shared something and felt truly seen?

Stop measuring yourself against imagined standards. You don’t need a studio, a script, or an algorithm.

All you need is permission—to explore, to speak, to connect.

And I’ve just granted it to you.

Start with small acts of sharing, and let your genuine perspective guide you forward.

Welcome back friend!

When I go too long without writing here, I start to get antsy—or feel guilty about the new folks who’ve subscribed to this publication.

I’ve been going through a super busy stretch recently. In the past, that would stress me out. So much to do, so little time!

Lately, I’ve been prioritizing self-care. Whether it’s 20 minutes of meditation in the morning, Spanish lessons on DuoLingo, or working on my DJ skills, I’m learning to carve out time for the things that bring me joy.

And writing? It’s something I’ve been consistent with—sort of. I’m actually on a 68-day streak of writing a daily marketing email. One of my new coaches challenged me, and it’s been a fun experience.

These are quick, story-based emails, usually around 200 words, that don’t get too deep. If you’re looking for some daily podcast inspiration, check it out here.

But this kind of writing? This is the harder kind. The kind that asks you to be vulnerable. The kind where you have to share what’s in your heart.

What I’ve come to realize over these past 54 years is that, as cliché as it sounds, it really is a journey. I’m learning to be kind to myself and focus on the 1% improvements I make daily.

The key is becoming more self-aware of the areas where I can grow. How do I become a better listener? How do I become more patient? Where am I repeating patterns year after year that I need to finally address?

All of this requires silence and space. It may seem obvious, but I know I need to make time to listen—whether that’s to my higher self, intuition, God, Spirit, or the Universe (choose the one that resonates for you).

And the funny thing? Creativity works the same way. It needs space, time, and flow.

Getting In The Flow

One thing I love about long work stretches is having a DJ set jamming in the background. It’s definitely my flow music.

And as tends to happen, I inevitably hear new tracks that catch my ear.

Call it my DJ ear. It’s one of my few musical superpowers—I can hear just a few bars of a track and immediately know if it belongs in a set.

Since I don’t play an instrument, the closest I come to creating music is curating it.

I’ve heard many, many DJ sets over last few decades (ha! that felt weird to type out). When done well, they create magic.

But I’ve also seen many fall flat—or worse, be so forgettable that I stop playing them a few minutes in. It’s a vibe for sure.

That’s why I take it seriously—curating a set that’s consistent from start to finish.

If you visit my SoundCloud page, you’ll find mixes going back 14+ years. It’s wild to look back.

And every year, I tell myself this is the year I’ll produce four mixes. You can probably do the math on how that’s panned out.

But I’ve learned to be gentle with myself. Sometimes life takes over, and years go by without me making a mix. Inevitably, though, the dance muse comes calling.

Once I start, it takes effort to get into the flow. As much as I’d love to record an hour-long set in one take, it rarely works that way. It typically takes weeks to curate the music.

Mostly, I have to record in chunks, then stitch them together into a rhythmic flow. Some additional mastering helps balance the sound. Then there’s the cover art and giving credit to all the producers. Once it’s ready, I upload it to SoundCloud.

Now that the creativity is flowing, I take it further—piecing together a collage of video snippets, merging them with the mix to create something visually engaging. I then upload that video to YouTube.

Once everything is live, I craft posts for SoundCloud, Instagram, X and Facebook. 😅 I know—it’s a lot. But when I’m promoting something I’m proud of, it feels effortless.

And that’s when it hit me—writing is the same way.

The Art of Creating (Anything)

I was reminded of this today by Erick Godsey. His recent post, "How I’ve Written an Article (Almost) Every Week for 10 Years," jostled something loose.

He shared this quote, and it stuck with me:

"Our beautiful broken world is full of gods with amnesia, souls disconnected from their dharma, who, if by chance or grace, catch a glimpse of someone honestly trying to wake up and help out, they remember."

There is a group of unique people on this planet who will respond to your shares.

These people need you.”

So if my words or my mixtape get you thinking (and moving), I’m smiling.

I did something completely out of my comfort zone on Saturday morning.

I cold plunged into a 35 degree lake.

Yes, I know, that might have just made me an official Midwesterner.

Now, don’t get me wrong—I wasn’t exactly gung-ho about the idea. In fact, from the moment my partner mentioned we were invited to a sauna/cold plunge birthday party, I wasn't exactly jumping for joy.

If I’m being completely honest, for the 2 days leading up to it, I was a bit anxious and slightly nervous.

Last year, I was convinced to take a dip in a lake further up north. The water was 55 degrees, and I thought that was COLD.

Don’t get me wrong, I love swimming in a lake when it’s 80 degrees out.

28 degree days are another thing altogether.

Unlike me, many folks that grew up in the Midwest are used to exercising their Scandinavian roots, and have been cold plunging since they were children.

(BTW, I think I’m saying “folks” a lot more than I used to)

In retrospect, I think what was freaking me out was a fear of the unknown. Much like I used to have a fear of roller coasters when I was younger.

Then, one day my girlfriend and I went to the amusement park and decided to ride all the coasters in one day.

You can pretty much guess what happened afterwards.

Fear of rollercoasters gone.

That feeling of hesitation, the nerves leading up to the moment, and then the realization that it wasn’t nearly as bad as I’d built it up in my head—that wasn’t just about the cold plunge.

I’ve felt that same resistance in other areas of my life.

Most recently, I just wrapped up 31 days of sending a daily email to my marketing list—and it turned out better than expected.

I joined a daily email challenge at the end of last year, initially worried that I’d totally annoy my list and have everyone unsubscribe.

To the contrary, I’m getting a 40% open rate on these emails and I’m enjoying the process as well!

All I do is talk about something I learned, an insight from a client, a student win, or whatever else happened in the last 24 hours.

Looking back over my life, it’s this fear of the unknown that has held me back at times.

As I get older and (hopefully) a bit wiser, I realize that most of the things I fear aren’t actually dangerous—they’re just unfamiliar.

And the best way to conquer that fear?

Take action anyway.

Whether it’s jumping into a freezing lake or hitting ‘send’ on an email, the hardest part is always before you begin. But once you do it, you’ll wonder why you waited so long.

It’s Sunday afternoon as I write this, and I’m in an Uber on my way to White Plains Airport in NY.

The first thing I noticed as I sat down was the newspaper next to my chair. It was a physical copy of The Epoch Times, and for some strange reason, it brought a smile to my face.

As a child of the 80s, I’ve always had a fondness for the analog world. For many years, I maintained a subscription to the Sunday New York Times. There was something deeply enjoyable about working my way through all the sections, learning what was new in the world while expanding my cultural awareness at the same time.

As I sat there reading the newspaper (at eye level to avoid car sickness, of course), I came across an article titled: The Goodness and Beauty of the Private Life.

I had just left my parents’ home in Yonkers, feeling the familiar pang of parting after a few precious days together.

Family time, for me, always feels sacred—a reminder of what matters most in a world that moves too fast. It’s also a reminder that life is short and how important it is to celebrate the time we have together.

Reading the article, I couldn’t help but feel the synchronicity of the moment.

The piece talked about how much of our lives we now broadcast to the world, often forgetting the simple beauty of keeping parts of ourselves reserved for those closest to us.

It included some staggering statistics: Americans share 1.8 billion images online daily and upload over 68,000 hours of video to YouTube every single minute. Numbers like these make me pause and think—when did our private lives become so public?

I, for one, am so glad I didn’t grow up in a time when every moment of our lives was constantly broadcast to the world.

It’s easy to feel the pull to share everything—or, if you’re an entrepreneur, to build a “brand” or keep up with the endless digital scroll.

But as I sat there reflecting on my time with family over the past few days—laughing with my mom, sharing memories with my dad, reconnecting with my aunt, sister, and niece—I was reminded of the richness of intimacy. The kind of connection you simply can’t replicate online.

What I loved most about the article was its gentle reminder: the act of reserving parts of our lives for those we trust is a choice. It’s not about withholding but about honoring those bonds—ones rooted in love, shared history, and genuine connection. These private moments are where life often feels most real.

As I head back home to Minnesota for the holidays, I’m taking this thought with me: How can I be more intentional about what I share and who I share it with? Am I leaving enough space for the sacred?

Maybe we don’t need to document and distribute every moment of our lives to prove they happened. Maybe the best parts of life are the ones we keep for ourselves and those closest to us.

This next few weeks, I invite you to take a moment and reflect: What parts of your life are you keeping private? What are you sharing? And most importantly, how can you make space for the beauty that only lives behind closed doors?

Here’s to living more fully in those private moments.

There’s no shortage of books-in-progress on my Kindle and nightstand these days. Just as I’m wrapping up one, the Universe seems to place another right in my lap.

One that I’m currently making my way through is 10X is Easier Than 2X by Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan, and it’s been an eye-opener. The central idea of the book is simple but profound: aiming for 10X growth doesn’t require doing more of the same; it demands a completely different mindset—one that focuses on simplification and letting go of what doesn’t serve your highest potential.

One concept from the book that really struck me is the idea of Unique Ability.

What is Unique Ability?

According to the authors, your Unique Ability is the way you provide the most value to others in a way that no one else can replicate. Benjamin Hardy puts it beautifully:

“To become a true master at what you do, you can’t just be an expert. Expertise is doing something well. Mastery is doing something uniquely well. A master is someone who can’t be replicated—they can only be learned from.”

This idea resonates deeply. Mastery isn’t about copying what others do or even being the best at a common skill; it’s about embracing the things that make you, you. It’s about leaning into what you do differently, effortlessly, and joyfully.

Reflecting on My Journey

As I was working through this draft on a Sunday afternoon, I found myself reflecting on my own life and work. I've built a 2nd career I’m proud of—publishing over 500 podcast episodes, helping more than 120 clients launch their shows, and even speaking on multiple stages in multiple countries about podcasting and vertical farming, of all things. These are achievements I value, yet when I look at them through the lens of Unique Ability, I realize I’m still in the process of discovering my own mastery.

My interests are many, and span across DJing, productivity, writing, electronic music production, healthy living, building a profitable business, and managing a team. Lately, I’ve been diving deeper into the possibilities of AI. And, of course, there’s my lifelong passion for spirituality and metaphysics, which I’ve woven into my personal and professional life. While these varied pursuits keep my life exciting, they also remind me how much room I have to grow—especially when it comes to focusing my energy on what I can uniquely master.

On top of all those interests I’ve mentioned, my own journey of self-reflection continues to unfold, constantly revealing opportunities for growth in my personal relationships.

The Cosmic Conduit

A few years ago, I worked with a coach who asked me a pivotal question: “What are you best in the world at?” That question sparked weeks of introspection. Eventually, I landed on a phrase that felt true to me at the time:

“I AM the Cosmic Conduit for awakened souls ready to transmit their message to a global audience.”

I even put it front and center on my LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram profiles. Looking back now, I realize this was only the beginning. It was my first attempt at articulating my Unique Ability—a mix of my passion for podcasting, spirituality, and helping others find their voice.

But mastery? That’s a whole new level. It’s not just about discovering your Unique Ability; it’s about refining it, honing it, and leaning into it with dedicated focus.

What’s Next?

Reading 10X is Easier Than 2X has reignited my curiosity about what’s possible when I focus deeply on my Unique Ability. What would my life look like if I truly mastered the art of being a "cosmic conduit", for one? How would it change my business, my personal life, and even my spiritual practice?

It’s one idea, of many, which excites me, and I’m eager to explore it further—not just in theory but in practice. Mastery, as the book teaches, is a journey, not a destination. And for me, the journey is just as rewarding as the destination.

I’m excited to share more as I go deeper into this work. As always, I appreciate every one of you reading this. I appreciate your presence and your willingness to follow along on this path.

Final Thought: What’s Your Unique Ability?

I Can Do This

Last year, during a relaxing stay at a friend’s house in Hawaii, I found myself flipping through a few of the homeowner’s baking books.

The one that caught my eye was Josey Baker Bread. Written in an easygoing, approachable style, it simplifies the process of baking your first loaf—a far cry from the dense bread guides I’d seen before.

Since the materials were already on hand, I decided to try my luck at making sourdough bread for the first time.

Maybe it was the “magic of the islands,” or just beginner’s luck, but that first loaf turned out perfect.

There was something so satisfying about knocking on the bottom of the cooled loaf and hearing that hollow sound. The crust had the perfect crunch, and the inside? Soft, airy, with that sourdough smell.

Since then, I’ve been trying to recreate that magic back home in Minnesota. But… let’s just say the results have been inconsistent.

Some loaves have barely risen; others come out dense, in a mocking kind of way. Still, I keep coming back to it—not for the end result, but for the process itself.

There’s something grounding about baking bread. As someone who spends most of the day online, I’ve discovered a small, tactile joy in kneading dough with my hands. It’s messy and imperfect, and that’s what makes it beautiful.

Sourdough, in particular, feels alive—unpredictable, very temperamental. It teaches patience. There are so many variables at play, it’s maddening at times to figure out what works.

You can’t rush the proofing. You can’t force the dough to rise. You can’t control the outcome. And somehow, that’s the point. It’s a quiet reminder that not everything in life can be planned or perfected.

Each loaf, successful or not, feels like a little lesson in humility and presence. And isn’t that what it’s all about? To embrace the process, to experiment, and to sample the simple joy of creating something with your hands?

In a lot of ways, my sourdough journey feels like life. Some days, you nail it. Other days? Not so much.

But the goal isn’t perfection. It’s showing up, getting your hands messy, and finding joy in the experience.

That’s something I’m working toward every day. Maybe it’s why I keep trying.

The Journey Continues

Two years ago, I launched a new format for this newsletter, sharing the winding, non-linear story of my early career and life journey.

In Your Journey Is Never Linear, I opened with the surreal image of me—suited up, pushing an ATM down a Brooklyn street. That bizarre moment encapsulated the unpredictability of my career and set the tone for a tale of reinvention.

From my early days as a bank teller with an entrepreneurial spark, to chasing the dot-com dream (and failing spectacularly), to humbling, but ultimately joyful, stints as a waiter, and eventually taking bold leaps with my career, my story unraveled in twists and turns.

Along the way, I navigated risks, learned from mentors, survived the chaos of a family business, and even confronted a near-death experience in Thailand.

It was a reflection on how life rarely unfolds in a straight line but always leaves clues for those willing to connect the dots. If you're new here or want some background on my journey, I’ve linked to that story below.

Two Years Later: A Reflection

Fast-forward two years—almost to the day.

When I first started this newsletter, my goal was to publish a letter every week. And, at first, I did. I started strong. But eventually, I wavered. And it’s been a bit haphazard since then.

I could give you a list of reasons why, but in the end, they’d all sound like excuses.

As a neurodivergent person, I’ve had to confront the reality that my mind is often juggling competing thoughts at any given moment. There’s a constant buzz, and managing that noise has been one of the most significant challenges of my life. But at some point, it comes down to this: I have to decide which of those thoughts I’ll give power to.

Acclimating to a New Life

The past two years have been full of changes. My partner Natalie and I relocated just outside Minneapolis. Life here has brought its own mix of blessings and challenges.

On the plus side, our sleep has improved a thousandfold since leaving Uptown. It’s amazing how much better you feel when your nights are quiet and restorative.

But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t occasionally miss the energy of city living. Having spent chapters of my life in New York and Los Angeles, I’ve always thrived on the buzz of urban environments.

Now, though, I’m finding that I’ve become more of a homebody. It takes a lot to pull me out of the house these days. Maybe it’s a function of getting older, or maybe it’s the consequence of pouring so much energy into work that I’ve neglected cultivating my social life.

Starting over in a new city—without old friends nearby—has been harder than I anticipated. It’s jarring, to say the least. I never really gave much thought to how isolating it can feel to rebuild a sense of community from scratch.

On a positive note, I’ve been lucky to find a monthly men’s circle to participate in, which has been grounding. But I know I need more.

Moments of Connection

The past two years haven’t been without highlights. There have been memorable trips and opportunities to speak on a few podcast stages. Those conferences are great for catching up with old friends, but I’ve noticed that those connections, if I”m not careful, often result in a lot of ‘wide and shallow’ rather than ‘narrow and deep’.

And that’s what I’m missing: deeper connection. A sense of rooted community.

A Fresh Start

So, here I am, recommitting to this newsletter. Weekly posting feels like an ambitious goal, but it’s one I’m ready to embrace again.

This time, though, it’s not just about consistency in writing. It’s also about fostering community—nurturing relationships that feel meaningful, both in this space and in my offline life.

The journey continues, and I’m excited to see where it leads.

By the way, I know I start these letters with an invitation to share what resonates, but I feel called to remind you of that invitation once again. Especially on the topic of community and connection.

I hearing more people share how they’re feeling more lonely and disconnected than ever, and I think we need to talk about that more.

The origin story is that I took a mostly-dormant list that I occasionally marketed to, and pivoted the content to more personal topics.

For my podcast agency, I ended up creating a new newsletter from scratch for folks that sign up any of my lead magnets and free resources.

Given there’s a bit of overlap with this audience, I wanted to share details about a workshop I’m putting together, without all the ‘marketing speak’.

For the record, when it comes to marketing, I’m not saying I have all this figured out, and I’m always open to new ideas.

One of the recommendations when writing subject lines is to ensure that it stirs up the ‘pain point’ for the audience, as this is what prompts them to take action.

So, that said, the subject line I went with was ‘Danger Ahead: Your 2025 Podcast Plan Sucks’

I know, harsh.

But as of this writing, the open rate is at 55% 😮

Here’s the copy I went with:

Well, it's November and it's almost the end of the year.

It's mission critical time!

Why? Because it's the time where 90% of business owners really screw up.

Really.

I see the same thing every year.

They think, “Oh I’ve got this all figured out. I don’t need to continue building my authority and nurturing my best leads.”

And then they’re scratching their heads in March, wondering why their business is dying.

(PRO TIP: If you’re not growing, you’re dying, status quo is not viable option)

When I was in grade school one of the many highlights of the month would be the visit from the Bookmobile.

Not sure if this is even a thing nowadays, but this awesome van full of books would park outside of our school on a Friday, and we could go in and check out the latest books.

One particular series that fascinated me was the Choose Your Own Adventure books

Originally created for 7 to 14-year-olds, the books were written in the second person. The reader takes on an adventurous role, such as a private investigator, mountain climber, race car driver, doctor, or spy.

The stories were formatted so that, after a few pages, we’d be given 2 or 3 options, each of which leads to further pages and further options, and so on until you arrive at one of the many story endings

There was a realistic sense of unpredictability, which led to repeat readings. Something about this ability to choose your own future really drew me in.

More Adventure Please!

Around the same time, I discovered the magic of Narnia, via The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. This cartoon series was based on the fantasy novel for children, written by C. S. Lewis. It’s the first published and best known of seven novels in The Chronicles of Narnia.

Something about both the books and the wonder and mystery of Narnia really spoke to my sense of adventure and I was captivated by the thoughts of these magical worlds.

As I got older I began to lose that sense of wonder and amazement.

It’s not something specific I can point to but, over time, the banality of real life started to creep in. It would take many decades to re-discover that magic.

Relight My Fire

In recent years, I’ve rekindled that curiosity for the unknown. Part of it is embracing this spiritual journey I’ve been on for the past 20-ish years.

Through the magic of spiritual texts and plant medicine experiences which have expanded my mind (and heart), I started to remember just how magical this world can be if we allow it to.

I’ve been digging in to some wild rabbit hole-type stuff lately, and I love it! Follow along on IG and you’ll get a taste of it from my stories.

Last year I shared a post on my Facebook page on my birthday, and talked about my trip around the sun as more of an up level, which feels much more in alignment than talking about ‘age’.

This solar return is a reminder to catch my breath and look back a the last 12 months.

I’ve been in go-go-go mode lately as I’m looking to take my business to the next level by this time next year.

When I’m in those modes, I’m moving so fast that I don’t stop to smell the roses.

I realize it’s important to share and celebrate whenever I get the opportunity.

Levels > Numbers

I used to be really self-conscious about my age as I would celebrate each passing year.

What would people think?

Should I have achieved certain milestones by now?

Am I a failure for not achieving said milestones?

As I get older, I’ve come to the cleara realization that NONE OF THAT SHIT MATTERS.

You are EXACTLY where you are supposed to be.

This past year has been one of growth and a renewal of purpose.

Settling In

We now have 5 chickens!

For those of you who now me as the quintessential New Yorker, this is a big shift.

These past few months, my partner and I have built gardens, planted veggies, built a chicken coop for the chickies, and made improvements to our home.

I want to recognize those wins. You should as well.

As I shared in last year’s post, I’m keenly aware, from my soul’s perspective that I created this life ON PURPOSE.

I like the term Levels, because it is aspirational, and also, there’s less inherent hierarchy involved.

I can, and am able, to learn just as much from someone at Level 33 or Level 11, as I am from someone at level 77. Wisdom comes in all shapes and sizes.

I’ve learned a lot, what to do, as well as what not to do.

I have an obligation to share my story here and in all the places where it can reach an audience.

If my journey and my story and my trials, tribulations, wins and successes motivate you to move forward in your life, than I’m on my way to succeeding in my mission.

I implore you to share yours. There’s someone out there who needs to hear it, and it will be life changing.

A few weeks ago, we had roofers repairing my outside office. They were there most of the afternoon and I was checking in on them periodically throughout the day.

During one of those check-ins, I got to chatting with the foreman, Jose, and he shared something that really stuck with me. It’s a story that many of will relate to, especially those of you who’ve had to decide between hiring a pro or opting for the “cheaper” route.

A few months ago, Jose and his crew were working on a house when a neighbor saw them and came over to ask for a quote for her roof. After taking a look, Jose gave her a fair price based on the quality materials, proper weatherproofing, and the labor it would take to get the job done right.

The woman hesitated.

She told Jose her “handyman” had quoted her $1,000 less and asked if he could match that price. Jose, standing by the value of his work, told her he couldn’t. He knew exactly how much time and effort it would take to ensure her roof would last for years to come.

The woman decided to go with the “handyman”.

Fast forward three months, and Jose gets a call from the same woman—her roof was leaking, and water was running down the walls of her living room. Not a good situation.

When Jose came to inspect it, he found that the handyman had cut corners, didn’t properly weatherproof the roof, and used subpar materials. The damage was worse than if the job had been done right from the start.

Jose had to explain to the distraught woman that it would now cost more than his original quote because not only did he need to replace the roof, but he also had to fix the botched work done by the “handyman”.

Hearing this story immediately brought to mind a quote I’ve heard many times during my entrepreneurial journey. 

“If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional, wait until you hire an amateur.”

The Value of Expertise

This story is an all-too-common reminder that the cheapest option often ends up being the most expensive in the long run. Why?

Because when you cut corners or hire someone who doesn’t have the experience, expertise, or commitment to doing the job right, you’re setting yourself up for more headaches down the road. It’s a gamble.

I see this same situation play out when inexperienced business owners are deciding to launch their shows. There’s always the temptation to save a few dollars by doing everything themselves, delegating it to an already over-worked team member, or worst of all, hiring the ‘cheapest option’.

Here’s the thing: producing a quality show isn’t just about getting it out the door. It’s about making sure every piece is carefully crafted so your message comes across with clarity, authority, and impact.

Just like Jose’s roofing work, podcast production requires more than surface-level fixes. It takes careful planning, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality. When you hire someone who knows what they’re doing—someone who has spent 10+ years mastering their craft—you’re not just paying for the end product. You’re paying for the peace of mind that comes with knowing your podcast is being built on a solid foundation.

The Hidden Costs of Cutting Corners

When you hire someone based solely on price, you’re not considering the hidden costs that come with cutting corners. You end up with audio quality that isn’t up to par, which ends up reflecting poorly on your brand.

Mind you, if you’ve been in business for a decent amount of time, your brand is something that you’ve had to work hard to cultivate. Don’t throw it in the trash based on a poorly-thought-out decision.

And here’s the kicker: when things go wrong (and they often do), it costs you more time, energy, and money to fix the mistakes than if you’d just hired the right person from the start.

I’ve worked with clients who have come to me after trying to launch their podcasts on their own or working with someone who wasn’t fully invested in the project.

They often come to me frustrated, overwhelmed, and in need of a complete overhaul. And just like Jose’s experience with the woman’s roof, I’ve had to tell them that fixing the problem will cost more than if they’d invested in a proper launch from the beginning.

Investing in the Right Help

Look, I get it. When you’re starting something new, whether it’s a podcast or any other project, there’s always the temptation to save money. But what I’ve learned, both from personal experience and from working with clients, is that the real cost of cutting corners isn’t just financial—it’s emotional.

It’s the stress of seeing your vision not fully realized, the frustration of having to go back and fix things, and the anxiety of wondering if you made the right call.

When you hire someone who knows what they’re doing, you’re not just paying for their time or services. You’re investing in their expertise, their experience, and their commitment to helping you succeed. You’re paying for the confidence that comes with knowing your show will stand the test of time, just like a well-built roof. 😉

When It’s Time to Take the Leap

If you’re thinking about starting a podcast or stepping into a new project, I want you to take a moment to reflect. Are you ready to commit to doing it right? Are you willing to invest in the tools, resources, and people that will help you succeed in the long run?

If the answer is yes, then I encourage you to think carefully about who you bring on board. Look for someone who understands your vision, who has a track record of success, and who will take the time to ensure every detail is handled with care. Yes, it may cost more upfront, but trust me—it will save you time AND money in the long run.

Remember, much like Jose’s roofing work, building something that lasts requires a foundation of quality, expertise, and attention to detail. Whether it’s a roof, a podcast, or any other project, the work you put in today will determine the strength of what you create tomorrow.

Your Call to Action

Here’s my challenge to you: the next time you’re faced with the decision to hire someone for a project that matters to you, take a moment to think beyond the price tag. Ask yourself, “Am I willing to invest in quality, or am I more focused on saving money in the short term?”

And if you’re considering launching a podcast or growing your existing show, know that you don’t have to go it alone. Your message is too important to risk it by cutting corners.

It’s Saturday morning, and I’m in the middle of my 2nd Dharma Artist Collective sprint as I write this.

In one of the recent teachings, Erick Godsey shares a powerful metaphor which I’ve been sitting with for a few weeks: the image of the oak tree inside each of us, waiting to manifest.

He writes about the force that can be found within an acorn, bound to its commitment to become an oak, and compares it to the potential inside each of us.

It’s a poetic reminder that we all have a version of ourselves that, if fully realized, could transform the world.

As I was typing out that last sentence, I couldn’t help but remind myself (and you) of the power of words. As such, let’s tweak that one a bit:

It’s a poetic reminder that we all have a version of ourselves that, WHEN fully realized, WILL transform the world.

Ah, much more potent! 💪

But here’s the catch—much like the acorn, our potential can only emerge if we are willing to grow, shed what holds us back, and take bold (and sometimes scary) action toward becoming that version of ourselves.

This idea resonates deeply with me because I’ve been on this journey of growth for years decades, both personally and professionally. And the more I dive into it, the clearer it becomes:

The Acorn and the Oak Tree

An acorn doesn’t question whether it’s meant to become an oak tree. It doesn’t second-guess its purpose or wonder if it’s "good enough" to grow tall and strong.

The acorn simply commits to the process, trusting that with time, nurturing, and the right environment, it will fulfill its potential.

What if you approached your own growth with the same unwavering commitment?

Unlike the acorn, my tendency has been to doubt, to hold myself back, to cling to stories that keep me small. Whether it's the fear of failure, a belief that I’m not "ready," or the stories I’ve inherited about who I am and what I’m capable of, I know that these narratives act like barriers between me and my true potential.

I sense the same is true for you.

But here’s the truth: inside each of us is the oak tree—the version of ourselves that’s capable of changing not only our own lives, but the lives of those around us.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves

I’ve written before about the power of stories, and how they shape our worldview. But recently, I’ve started to see more clearly how these stories either empower us to step into our potential or hold us back from it.

Think about it: How often have you told yourself any of the following:

“I’m not good enough” or

“I don’t have what it takes” or

“I can’t figure this out” or

“I’m afraid to take this next step”?

How many times have you let a fear of failure stop you from taking that first step toward a dream?

I’m going to intentionally pause here and invite you to go back and re-read that last sentence until you feel it has sunk in. And yes, tears may fall.

These stories can be deeply ingrained, often planted in us during childhood ✋. Doubts about juggling the demands of running a business, maintaining meaningful relationships, and being fully present in my life.

That old narrative kept me small, and it wasn’t until I started questioning it—really digging into where it came from and why I believed it—that I began to rewrite it.

Let’s not get it twisted, though. This is a life-long process. Trust me, I know 😂. But it’s one that’s necessary if I’m ever going to become the oak tree I’m meant to be.

Tend to Your Growth

Just as the acorn needs the right conditions to grow into an oak tree—sunlight, water, rich soil—so too do we need the right environment to nurture our growth.

For me, joining The Dharma Artist Collective has been one of those key pieces. There’s something about showing up consistently, day after day, to meditate, reflect, and simply ‘be’ that has grounded me. It’s created space for me to step into a version of myself that feels more aligned with who I’m truly meant to be.

Do I miss days occasionally, or find it difficult to focus during these sessions at times? Most definitely. But it’s the act of showing up the helps immensely.

Remember, the Universe rewards momentum.

What’s your version of that? It might be a group of like-minded people who challenge and support you. It could be a daily practice like journaling, meditation, or exercise that helps you stay connected to your inner truth. Whatever it is, make sure you’re nurturing yourself and creating the conditions for growth.

But here’s the important part: It’s not enough to simply set the stage for growth. We also have to take action.

Take Bold Action

The acorn doesn’t just sit in the soil and hope to become a tree one day. It acts. It breaks through its shell, extends its roots, and reaches for the sky.

This is where many of us get stuck. We dream about becoming the oak tree, we can even see glimpses of it in our minds, but we hesitate when it comes to taking the actions that will get us there.

We know we need to stop engaging in habits that keep us small—whether it’s procrastination, self-doubt, or the comforts of routine. And yet, we stay in our shells, afraid of what might happen if we break free.

There is no shame in losing. The only shame is in not trying.

I get it. I’ve been there. And I continue to learn more every day. This is a lifelong journey for me.

But here’s what I’ve learned: The longer we wait, the harder it becomes to take that first step. The more we tell ourselves, “Maybe tomorrow,” the more we reinforce the story that we’re not ready, not capable, or not worthy.

The truth is, there is never a perfect moment to start. As one of my coaches likes to remind me, “Perfect is the enemy of done.” There is only now. And every small step you take—every action that aligns with your potential—brings you closer to becoming that oak tree.

Become the Oak Tree Today

So what does it look like to live as the oak tree within you?

It looks like taking consistent action toward your goals, even when you’re scared. It looks like letting go of the stories that keep you small and embracing the possibility of what could be. It looks like trusting that the force inside you—the same force that drives an acorn to become an oak tree—knows exactly what it’s doing.

Imagine the impact you could have on the world if you stopped playing small. What would your life look like if you fully stepped into your potential? How would your relationships change? How would your work change? How would the world around you change?

A Call to Action

Here’s my challenge to you: Start taking the steps today that will lead you closer to becoming that oak tree. Identify one story that’s been keeping you small, and begin the process of rewriting it. Take one action—no matter how small—that aligns with the version of yourself you know you’re capable of becoming.

You don’t have to have it all figured out. None of us do. But by showing up, taking consistent action, and trusting the process, you can begin to manifest the potential within you.

Remember, the world needs more oak trees—people who are committed to living fully, embracing their purpose, and inspiring others along the way. And that starts with you.

On January 12, 2014 I boarded a flight to Las Vegas, Nevada, en route to New Media Expo. I was there to learn how to podcast.

What happened next changed the course of my life forever.

It Began With My Passion

Let’s rewind the clock back even further.

When I was about 14 or 15 years old, I was introduced to Freestyle, a style of music that emerged from the earlier Disco and Be-Bop sound of the early 80s. From there I witnessed the birth of House Music, which has become a passion ever since.

Fast forward to 2013. I had partnered with a friend to create a mobile app called Know Your DJ. Up until then the word “podcast” meant a DJ mix, that’s all.

Little did I know that within the world of “podcasts”, there were thousands of conversations happening on a wide range of topics, including digital marketing and mobile apps, which is what I wanted to learn more about.

I thought that starting a podcast would be the best to promote the app, so a few months later, when I heard about New Media Expo, I quickly booked my flight and purchased a ticket.

During the conference, as I was attending all the podcast sessions, I realized how hard it would be to track down these globe-trotting DJs so I pivoted to create my first show Podcast Junkies.

Fast forward ten years, and that curiosity has led me to countless conversations, unexpected opportunities, and a profound understanding of what it means to truly connect with an audience.

I’m grateful to various conferences that have given me the opportunity to share my story on their stages. Shout out to Podfest, MAPCon, Podcast Movement & We Are Podcast.

Telling My Story

Last week I was given the opportunity to share my story at Podcast Movement. My talk was titled “10 Valuable Lessons Learned From 10 Years of Podcast Junkies“.

From guerrilla marketing to finding your superfans, the insights I shared are not just for podcasters but for anyone looking to amplify their voice and message.

One of the most powerful realizations I've had over the years is the importance of authenticity—being your true self, both on and off the mic.

Do you want to create something meaningful? To connect deeply with your audience and make a real impact? Here’s what I’ve learned: it starts with just doing it—starting the damn thing, as I like to say.

Your 100th episode will be leaps and bounds ahead of your first, but none of that growth happens if you don’t begin. It’s about nurturing relationships, both with your guests and your listeners, and constantly evolving.

Whether it's about making a podcast or launching a new project, these principles apply universally. It’s about daring to be different, staying the course, and remembering that your unique voice is your superpower.

Here are a few highlights I shared in my talk.

Yes, You ARE Ready

Ready to take your passion to the next level?

If you’re like most people, your immediate reaction is to say “No, I don’t think I’m ready yet, Harry”

Here’s the cheat code:

You’re never “ready”.

But you have to start. Yes, today. Remember that ‘perfect’ is the enemy of done.

Here are some actionable steps you can start implementing today to get closer to your goals:

1. Define Your Unique Voice: Take 10 minutes to write down what you are truly passionate about and what unique perspective you bring to the table. This will be the foundation of your message.

2. Just Start: Yes, it bears repeating. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect. Whether it's a podcast, a Substack, or another creative project, take the first step today. Outline your first piece of content, record that first episode, or draft that first post.

3. Engage with Your Audience: Start building connections by asking for feedback. Create a short survey or ask a simple question on social media to understand what your audience wants more of.

4. Nurture Your Relationships: Reach out to potential guests, partners, or collaborators who align with your vision. A personal touch can make all the difference. Craft a thoughtful email or message that explains why you admire their work and how you see a potential collaboration.

5. Market Creatively: Think outside the box for promotion. Try one unconventional marketing tactic this week—like creating an eye-catching social media challenge, hosting a live Q&A session, or even handing out branded merch. (yes, that works 👇)

   

6. Reflect and Adapt: Take a moment at the end of each week to reflect on what’s working and what’s not. Adjust your strategy based on feedback and your own observations. Continuous improvement is key.

With less than 2 months to go until my 54th birthday 🤯, I find myself making more connections between my stories and the life I’ve lived.

Joining The Dharma Collective has been a stabilizing force for me. There’s a magic that happens when you show up every day at 7am, whether you feel like it or not.

Did I mention we now have 5 chickens? So part of my morning routine is ‘letting the girls out’, as well as putting the bird feeder out and providing a sprinkling of nuts and seeds for our daily visitors. Long time readers and friends are surely chuckling as they read this.

Why Stories Are Important

Ever since discovering Joseph Campbell’s work, I’ve been intrigued by how the Hero’s Journey has played out in my own life. If you’re not familiar with it, it is the basis for many of the movies you loved as a child, such as Star Wars. George Lucas has openly credited Campbell as the inspiration for the script

As I make my way through the course material I’m learning just how much of psychology and philosophy boils down to the stories we tell ourselves about the world and our place in it.

As I read about how stories shape our world view, I start to compare them to the narratives I've constructed throughout my life. These are narratives I've clung to which have shaped my reality, often limiting me in ways I didn't even realize.

For example, in my work with clients, I often encounter podcasters who are stuck because they’ve internalized a story of not being "good enough" or "expert enough" to share their voice.

I’ve come to understand that this narrative is a form of self-sabotage, a story they've told themselves that prevents them from stepping into their full potential.

It's the same kind of limiting belief Erick Godsey described when he talked about how stories can help us regulate our emotional systems and give us hope and meaning amidst life’s inherent suffering.

Rewriting My Own Stories

During a recent journal entry, I was reflecting on the sense of overwhelm I used to feel when it it come to handling all the responsibilities of running a business, coupled with the desire to be more present for my partner and in my friendships in the day-to-day.

I kept telling myself I couldn’t juggle all these roles without dropping the ball. This narrative led to sleepless nights and constant anxiety.

Over the years, and with a LOT of help via therapy, coaching and books, I began to see this story for what it was–a construct, a narrative I had the power to rewrite.

Our stories can either empower or imprison us, and this realization has motivated me to change the narrative. I’ve started to view challenges as opportunities for growth, rather than insurmountable obstacles. 

This shift in perspective didn’t happen overnight, but over time, it is transforming how I approach both my personal and professional life.

The Matrix of My Life

This idea that the stories we create in childhood—often in response to unmet needs—can dictate our adult lives is both sobering and liberating. It reminds me of how I used to view success strictly in terms of external achievements—wealth, recognition, and status. This story was deeply rooted in my upbringing, where success was defined by those around me.

But as I’ve grown and reflected, I’ve begun to dismantle that matrix, replacing it with a story that values inner fulfillment, creativity, and connection. This transformation didn’t happen in a vacuum; it was influenced by the people I’ve met, books I’ve read, and experiences I’ve had, much like the mentors and guides Erick mentions in his writings.

Destroying the Acorn

In one of Erick’s posts he uses the analogy of the acorn—a seed that must destroy itself to become the mighty oak. It’s a powerful reminder that growth often requires us to shed old identities and stories that no longer serve us.

In my own life, this has meant letting go of the need for constant validation and learning to trust my inner voice or "Daimon”.

In reading through past journal entries, there’s a recurring theme of breaking free from old patterns, much like the acorn bursting through its shell. It’s a painful process at times, trust me, but one that’s necessary for true growth.

This metaphor is especially relevant as I consider the direction of my work with my podcast clients and students, as well as my personal life. By embracing the unknown and trusting the process, I’ve found that I’m more aligned with my true purpose, and the stories I tell myself are now ones of possibility and potential.

Conclusion: Embracing Our Hero’s Journey

As I continue to explore the narratives that have shaped my life, I’m reminded that we are all on our own Hero’s Journey. There’s a reason Star Wars resonated with me so strongly when I first saw it in a movie theater (yes, I’m that old). In ways I didn’t understand in the moment, I was Luke.

Little did I know the journey I was about to embark upon…

The stories we tell ourselves are the maps that guide us, but it’s up to us to decide which stories to follow and which to rewrite.

By surrounding myself with like-minded souls, I find it easier to take a more active role in crafting these narratives, both for myself and for the people with whom I come into contact.

In the end, the most profound contribution I can make is to help others see the power in their own voices and stories—to guide them in breaking free from limiting beliefs and to support them in writing new chapters filled with hope, meaning, and purpose.

This is the essence of what I try to convey in my writing here, and it’s the journey I’m committed to sharing with all of you.
