Why You Should Treat Your Guests Like Gold

A Life Worth Living | Apr 22, 2022

Every Saturday I share a story about my life in a way that you can hopefully relate to. I believe we are all here to share our journey, both the highs and the lows, as this is how we collectively raise the consciousness of the planet. If anything resonates with you, please share! 🙏 (6 minute read)

Do you have a message on your welcome mat?

Ours reads, "Mi casa es tu casa."

It's a nice little message to greet friends and family every time they walk into our home.

Does Your Podcast Have a Welcome Mat?

As part of the podcast setup and launch work we do with our agency clients we create a shared client portal using a tool called Notion

For my most recent Podcast Junkies conversation with fan of the show Tim Brien, we put together a marketing page to promote his episode.

Regular listeners of the show have heard me say many times, "You never want a guest to work harder than you to promote the show, as they've already given you an hour of their valuable time."

That's why I started this practice early on with Podcast Junkies and it's a template we provide all of our clients so that they can make the best impression with their guests as well.

While I highly recommend using Notion as it always for embedding playable media and is incredibly easy to maintain, you can use Google Docs or a similar tool if you'd like.

If you want to follow along at home, click here and take a look at the page we created for my recent chat with Tim.

Anatomy of a Guest Marketing Page

One of the first things we do is embed the episode at the top of the page. Thankfully our preferred podcast host, Captivate, makes this super easy with their players.

We then provide a link to the client's website. This is a must to continue building SEO strength on your site.

We've also been adding their information on Podchaser as well. If you haven't heard of them, they're essentially the IMDB of podcasting. They are a high-ranking domain and it gives your show and your guest additional visibility.

We then link to all the show socials. You can't possibly predict which platform your guest is most active on, so giving them choices is the best option.

In the spirit of making things cut-and-paste easy, we provide sample copy they can use on Facebook and Instagram. We use a service called Click-To-Tweet which lets you build a clickable tweet that opens right away in Twitter.

Lastly, we provide the embed code from Captivate in case they want to post the player on their site. Remember that your guest may be looking for opportunities to grow authority as a speaker and trusted podcast guest, and this let's them build their 'as seen on' reel.

We remind them to share the episode with their own audience as well. Most times this will be via their newsletter. Early on, one of my most popular episodes was with Jason Stapleton. I found out later that he had promoted the episode to his newsletter audience and the spike in downloads was visible.

Remind them to leave a rating a review, as Tim was kind enough to do after his appearance.

We like using RateThisPodcast.com for this. Here's a pro tip: Make sure you read these reviews out on the air when you get them in! Trust me, the reviewer loves hearing the shout out!

Lastly, embed any graphics you've created for the promo of the episode so that the guest can include them in their promo of the show. Again, thanks Tim!

If this has inspired you to up-level your guest communications, you can start by duplicating the Notion page we shared here and modify it in your own voice.

And if you'd like some help with the production and marketing of your own show, by all means, reach out!

What examples do you have of 'treating your guest like gold'? I'd love to hear about them!

🙏 with gratitude,

Harry
